Tarakhchyan family of jewelers
Historic dynasty — gilded silver, engraving, medal carving
A four-generation dynasty of Alexandropol gold- and silversmiths: the patriarch Martiros Tarakhchyan's gilded silver vessel received the Grand Gold Medal at the 1889 Paris World's Fair.
His son Gurgen Tarakhchyan (1897–1943) made jewelry, silver vessels, tobacco boxes and engraved portrait pieces in the Gyumri goldsmithing tradition, and in the 1920s carved and engraved Soviet Armenia's first medals and badges, including the Armenian Labor Hero medal; the line continued through Gurgen's son Onik.
The masters are gone; the family's tools, molds and finished works have been documented in a museum room of the family home, and family pieces survive in museum collections.
