Tsolak Koshtoyan
Alexandropol-school silversmithing; mushurba vessels
Tsolak Koshtoyan is a fourth-generation hereditary silversmith of the Alexandropol school; his forebears migrated from Erzurum, and he still works with the family's inherited nineteenth-century molds and hand tools — including an iron vise brought from Germany in 1860.
He is credited with the mushurba, also called klklan — the “gurgling” silver or copper drinking vessel regarded as a symbol of Gyumri — with examples presented to notable visitors including the Pope.
He teaches in the visual-arts department of Shirak State University, and his son Artem continues the family line.
