Barmakian Jewelers
Diamond wholesaling and manufacturing; lost-wax casting
The firm is rooted in the emigration of five Barmakian brothers from Malatya to New England around 1910; brother Levon Barmakian was a jeweler, and his wife a stonecutter.
Levon studied casting in California and is recorded as the first precision caster in New England; the second generation — Ara, Diran and Vahan — broadened the business into diamond wholesaling, manufacturing and retailing from the 1950s.
Its Washington Street shop in Boston's Jeweler's Building was once the only Armenian-owned shop there — before the building became predominantly occupied by Armenian jewelers in the 1970s.
