Reverse intaglio carved inside gemstones
An Istanbul jeweler of Armenian descent, Sevan Bıçakçı was born in 1972 in the city's Samatya district and entered the Grand Bazaar workshop of the master Hovsep Çatak at age twelve — a documented continuation of the bazaar's master-apprentice goldsmithing lineage; his own atelier dates from 2002.
The atelier is known for reverse intaglio: scenes carved into the underside of gemstones so they appear within the stone, first realized in domed rings depicting Istanbul, alongside Byzantine and Ottoman iconography.
His work has received the Town & Country Couture Award and a Jameel Prize nomination.
